What does freedom mean to you? Now, obviously this is a very broad question. So let's narrow it down to help us think more clearly. What does "financial" freedom mean to you? Surely this is something we have all thought about at one time or another. (Please tell me I'm not the only one who obsesses about this stuff! Am I?) Some of us probably think about this way too much, and others perhaps way too little. Either way, this subject will most likely arise at some point in your life and will be contemplated by virtually every individual and/or family.
I believe there is no other component in life that is as influential to our mental well-being and internal happiness as consequences of our financial decisions. I have heard it said (I believe by Larry Burkett, a Christian Financial Counselor) that there are more scriptures in The Holy Bible concerning money than love. So obviously God understands that the way we handle our money matters is a critical part of who we are.
It is so easy to get caught up in buying all the "stuff" we possibly can. It is so natural for humans, yes, all of us, to live on every single penny we slave for. One thing I've learned in my years on this earth is that we are such a fickle species, especially when it come to finances. It's like all logic goes out the window when finances are concerned. We have such an internal struggle when it comes to financial decisions. One half argues that we desperately need to pursue debt freedom while the other half argues that we desperately need to borrow all the money necessary to have the latest, greatest gadgets, and of course, a big house and nice cars. This internal battle is irrational and exhausting because we can not have both. For many of us, it seems these adversaries are at war at all times inside our mind causing absolute chaos and anxiety in our life.
I ran across a video on Youtube a few years ago that has prompted me to write this short blog post. The presenter is Adam Baker, founder of the website www.manvsdebt.com, and he has clarified what freedom is to his family, and as a result, is living the life that he wants to live today. This video really inspires me, and I knew I had to share it with as many people as I could.
“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”
― Howard Thurman
It's time to stop all the nonsense, and when it comes to finances determine, "What does freedom mean to you?" Take 20 minutes out of your busy schedule and watch this video. Spend some time thinking about what you hear and then take action. If you are not where you want to be (who is?) make some needed changes to get yourself moving in the right direction. Then, ask yourself, "What does freedom mean to me?"
